Pirelli is to continue its recent trend of skipping tyre compounds in a bid to enliven strategic options in F1, at this weekend's Mexico City Grand Prix.
Last time out in Austin, the C1, C3 and C4 tyres were used as the hard-medium and soft compounds, with the C2 not in action.
For Mexico City, Pirelli has opted to shift one step softer, with the C2 now serving as the hard, with the C4 as the medium and C5 as the soft.
Pirelli has described the decision to bring the C2 as "an extremely conservative choice, with a considerable delta in terms of lap time compared to the other two, while also offering less grip."
The idea in going softer with the C4 and C5 tyres is to try to force multiple pit-stops through degradation as teams attempt a one-stopper but run the risk of being caught by cars on fresher tyres towards the end who have completed a second stop.
The C2 hard tyre is expected to be able to complete a full longer stint "comfortably."
