Piastri: First big F1 crash was 'always going to happen'

The Australian crashed out of second practice at Zandvoort as teammate Lando Norris topped the session.

Oscar Piastri has conceded that it was just a matter of time before his first big accident after he crashed in Dutch Grand Prix practice. In the second session at Zandvoort, Piastri lost control of the McLaren rounding the banked Turn 3, crashing hard into the barrier. Daniel Ricciardo was forced to take avoiding action to not hit the stricken Piastri, but in crashing into the wall, the AlphaTauri driver suffered a broken left hand and will be replaced by Liam Lawson for the remainder of the weekend. Piastri confessed to making the mistake, but felt it was inevitable that he would suffer a big crash at some point during his rookie season.

Piastri's confession

"I just went in a little bit too hot, tried to turn in a bit aggressively and unfortunately found the wall," Piastri told F1TV. "It is a shame, and unfortunate to give the guys a massive load of work [to repair the car], but we will try to bounce back. "I guess it was going to happen at some stage, but you never want it to. "I was just pushing a little bit too hard, and around here, especially in that corner, you pay a big consequence if you overdo it a little bit. "I'll try not to do it again." In better news for Piastri, teammate Lando Norris topped the second session as the MCL60 looked quick on the twisty Zandvoort circuit. "It's clearly been a good day on Lando's side of the garage, it was a quick FP2 for him," Piastri noted. "Even before the crash, I was feeling quite god with the car and the pace looked reasonable on the Hard tyre. "Obviously I've got a few less laps under my belt, but it is encouraging that the car is quick."
