Sergio Perez has revealed that he had an issue with his power unit which caused him to spin out of Singapore Grand Prix qualifying. Starting his final lap in Q2, Perez was outside of the top 10 and needed to better his lap time in order to advance into Q3 on a weekend Red Bull has badly struggled with the RB19. However, the Mexican driver found himself facing the wrong way at Turn 2 after spinning out, squashing his attempts at avoiding a seventh Q2 exit in 15 races in 2023. Perez was also joined in the drop zone by team-mate Max Verstappen, capping a difficult day for Red Bull, with the World Champion set for two stewards investigations.
Perez's spin
Reflecting on his session, Perez says that he had a problem with his engine which caused him to spin on his final push lap. "It was very difficult,” Perez told Sky Sports F1. "It’s been it's been tough because we've been making a few changes here and there, but nothing seems to transform the balance. “And then it just made it worse the fact that I could not give in my final attempt in Q2, massive under-delivery from the engine and then it kicked really hard. "I ended up losing the car. It’s a massive shame. I think Q3 was possible." Red Bull has won every race so far this season, but its chances of keeping that streak look extremely low ahead of Sunday’s race. When asked if its chances of a victory in Singapore are gone, Perez said: “Yeah, definitely. "I think if we are able to score a few points, I will be pleased with that."
