Sergio Perez feels that he "let the team down" with his crash during qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix. The Mexican has explained that an issue in trying to free his Red Bull from the barriers was the reason he could not carry on following the incident in Q2. Perez had been aiming to progress when he understeered off at Turn 4 and hit the barriers. Given that the angle of Perez's crash was straight to the barrier, he only sustained a broken front wing, which offered hopes of a recovery. However, he was unable to reverse out and was forced to retire from the session, which resulted in a 13th place qualifying result. Speaking after the session, Perez explained that he was able to engage reverse gear, but his car was stuck in position. "I got reverse gear, but the front wing was stuck underneath the Tecpro [barrier], and the marshal wouldn't help me," Perez told media, including RacingNews365 .com .
Perez: Recovery the aim of the race
With Ferrari's Charles Leclerc set to start the race from the back of the grid, Red Bull had the opportunity to take advantage of their rivals' misfortunes in qualifying. In normal circumstances, the race should have come down to one Ferrari versus two Red Bulls, but a 13th place result for Perez in qualifying leaves just one Red Bull and one Ferrari in the top four. Perez added that everything was set up for him to succeed in the qualifying session and that his intention is to "minimise the damage" done in the race. "It's a very frustrating day for myself, I let my team down and I'm very sorry," said Perez. "It was tricky to get a clean lap. There was a lot of traffic. I think the second session on the Inter[mediates] was the right thing to do. I think we had a good car to be able to fight [in qualifying]. "Now I need to focus on tomorrow and try to minimise the damage."
