Oscar Piastri has admitted surprise over how far off the front-running order McLaren was after FP1 in Monaco.
Piastri endured a challenging day and ended the second practice session in seventh place, over one second down on leader Lewis Hamilton.
It has left McLaren and Piastri with a lot of work to do to recover form ahead of Saturday's qualifying session, where 12 months ago, it took pole position and the victory with Lando Norris.
While Piastri felt progress was made between practice outings, he admitted the dramatic gap caught him by surprise.
“It felt okay, just not as speedy as we would like, unfortunately,” Piastri said.
“A bit of a difficult one. We made a bit of progress for FP2, but we went from a second and a half off to a second off.
“It's been a tough day for us, for sure. So some things to find overnight.
“We always expected Ferrari to be quick, and they look very, very quick but we were hoping we would be a fair bit closer.
“Let's see what we can try and muster up for tonight.”
Piastri, who is a two-time podium finisher around Monaco, hinted there are no dramatic fixes for the team to find overnight.
“In today's F1, there's never anything you can do to turn the car completely upside down,” he said.
“We'll try and find something for sure, because we need to - but I don't have any great ideas.”
