Oscar Piastri has accused Lewis Hamilton of “not looking in his mirrors” after he found himself impeded by the seven-time champion during qualifying.
Piastri failed to register a final effort at the end of Q3 at the Hungarian Grand Prix, confining him to P5 at the chequered flag.
The McLaren driver was unable to complete his final lap as he came across Hamilton at the first corner, forcing him to abort his effort.
His result was made more painful as he watched team-mate Lando Norris seal pole position, marking the first non-Mercedes pole this season.
Sitting almost half a second down on Norris, Piastri suggested there was more pace in the bag.
“It was just Lewis not looking in his mirrors,” he told Sky F1.
"The yellow flag [for Max Verstappen] wasn't my problem.
"A shame because it meant I didn't get a lap in either way.
"Clearly the car has been quick today. I have certainly been chasing it, it has not been easy, but clearly there is performance there."
McLaren arrived at the Hungaroring with a substantial upgrade package as the development war under new regulations continues.
Evaluating their performance, Piastri told media including RacingNews365: “Clearly, they're pretty good.
“One car is on pole, so no, I think they've done a good job. This was the kind of step we've needed.
“We'll see if it's going to be enough to help us everywhere, but definitely, the car is quicker.”
