Oscar Piastri has broken the record of Sir Jack Brabham and Alan Jones for the most wins in an F1 season by an Australian driver following the Belgian GP.

Powering past team-mate Lando Norris on the first lap of the rolling start at Spa, Piastri earned the preferential strategy and went on to take a comfortable win to extend his points lead over Norris to 16 heading into the Hungarian GP.

In doing so, Piastri claimed his sixth win of the season - after China, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Miami, and Spain.

That breaks the record first set by Brabham in 1960 of five wins in a season by an Australian.

Brabham won five races on the trot to land his second world title that year, with the only other Australian world champion Jones racking up five wins as he took the 1980 crown, as the table below shows.

Piastri's Spa win was also the eighth of his career, drawing level with Daniel Ricciardo, and putting him one behind manager Mark Webber on nine.

Jones took 12 wins in his career, with Brabham leading the way on 14.

The last driver to score six or more wins in a season and not win the title was Lewis Hamilton with eight in 2021, whilst the last driver to score exactly six and not be champion was Felipe Massa in 2008.

Most wins in a season by an Australian driver

2. Alan Jones 1980 5
3. Sir Jack Brabham 1966 4
3. Alan Jones 1979 4
3. Mark Webber 2010 4
4. Daniel Ricciardo 2014 3
