Ollie Bearman and the Haas F1 team were at the centre of a strange end to the Q1 session at Imola.
Bearman crossed the line for his final attempt as a red flag was deployed following a crash for Franco Colapinto.
However, the lap time did not count as race control deemed it was set after the session had been stopped due to the red flag.
It placed Bearman in 19th place and the slowest of all drivers who had set a time, as Yuki Tsunoda failed to do so after crashing earlier in the session.
Haas expressed confidence that the lap time should have stood and the FIA reviewed whether Bearman set his time prior to the red flag deployment.
Bearman waited in the car as the FIA carried out its investigation, but when the session resumption time was given, Gabriel Bortoleto, who would have fallen into the drop zone if Bearman's lap had been instated, made his way to the end of the pit lane.
The entire process caused a significant delay to the session, but in the end, Bortoleto progressed while Bearman exited in Q1 alongside with team-mate Esteban Ocon.
