Kimi Antonelli delivers startling Ferrari verdict after upgrade boost

Kimi Antonelli has stated that Ferrari's straight-line speed is now matching Mercedes following its engine upgrade introduction at Monza.

The Italian squad chose its home race to introduce the new engine as it goes in search of another victory this season, and add to the two it has claimed thus far.

Mercedes was the benchmark for much of the opening half of the campaign and seemed to possess a strong advantage in a straight line, rather than through the corners.

Ferrari, meanwhile, has consistently voiced that its performance is being hindered when it comes to top speed - but Antonelli has now suggested that this is no longer the case.

“Ferrari, definitely they took a step forward with the new engine, and now the speeds are the same,” Antonelli said.

“We know how good their car is in the corners. So for sure, it's going to be a tight fight for pole tomorrow.”

Antonelli will start Sunday's Italian Grand Prix from the back of the grid after being fitted with a new power unit.

Mercedes chose his home race due to the ample overtaking opportunities that will feature during the race, and as such, spent all of Friday focusing on long-run performance.

“It's amazing to be here, and the support has been incredible,” Antonelli said.

“Today, a bit of a different day compared to usual, a lot more focused on long runs.

“It was a bit weird, not going to lie, but overall was a good day. We got a lot of data, and now looking forward to the next few days.”
