Lando Norris conceded to feeling "scared" inside the cockpit of his McLaren over the closing laps of the Chinese Grand Prix as he endured his "worst nightmare".
With Norris holding a comfortable second position in the latter stages of the 58-lap race at the Shanghai International Circuit, and threatening to push team-mate Oscar Piastri, Norris informed the team he could feel his brake medal 'going long'.
As the final laps unfolded, race engineer Will Joseph told Norris not to brake hard, to mind the brake pressure, and then, ultimately, that his brakes were "critical".
The final lap was a nervy one for Norris as Mercedes' George Russell reeled in his fellow Briton, but the championship leader kept his cool to claim the runner-up position.
Asked about the brakes post-race, Norris said: "It's scary. It's like my worst nightmare. When I have a nightmare, it's when the brakes are failing
"I was losing two, three, four seconds over the last couple of laps, so I was a bit scared but we survived and we made it to the end.
"We'd love to have given it a little try and put Oscar under a little pressure but not today. We're satisfied, great result, and we'll go again next time."
From third on the grid, Norris surged into second around the outside of Russell through the Turn 1-2 loop at the start, only to lose the position as Mercedes and Russell performed the undercut.
Norris, though, gained revenge with a superb move on Russell to reclaim second which he retained to the chequered flag.
Reflecting on the race overall, Norris added: "There were a few fun moments. The start, I was kind of hoping for exactly that, so Turn 1 went to plan.
"But then George got me on the pit stops. I was a little bit nervous but the pace was a lot better on the second stint.
"A tough race with the management [of tyres and brakes]. I don't think many people expected a one-stop today, so that was good,
"Oscar drove well. He was quick the whole race. I tried to get close, but in the end, I couldn't, so I'm happy with second.
"It's good points, and good points for us as a team with a one-two, so a big thank you to everyone in papaya. It was how we wanted the race to go."
