Nissan make major Andretti announcement as Formula E Gen4 customer outfit confirmed

Nissan has announced that Andretti will become its customer outfit for the opening seasons of Formula E's Gen4 era, confirming a multi-year agreement.

Andretti will become just the second customer outfit in the Japanese manufacturer's Formula E history, with the first having been McLaren.

The papaya squad used Nissan powertrains for three years during the Gen3 era before leaving the all-electric series at the end of last season.

Being without a customer team for the current and final campaign of the Gen3 regulations has been a setback for Nissan, particularly from a data standpoint.

That disadvantage will disappear for Gen4, with Andretti set to use Nissan's powertrain and work closely with the manufacturer.

The partnership will see technical expertise and engineering knowledge shared in a bid to boost development and understanding of the Gen4 package.

"We’re delighted to welcome Andretti Formula E as our customer team for the Gen4 era," said Nissan team principal Tommaso Volpe. 

"Formula E is an increasingly competitive championship, and having a strong partner is an important part of maximising both performance and technical development. 

"Andretti is one of the most successful names in motorsport, including Formula E, where it has established itself as one of the leading teams in the sport, consistently competing at the front and securing a drivers’ world championship. We look forward to working closely together and building a strong partnership."

Andretti's new adventure

For Andretti, it is a step slightly into the unknown, having been a customer outfit of Porsche throughout the Gen3 era.

It has proven a successful partnership for the American brand, with Jake Dennis having become world champion in 2023 (Season 9).

However, what it will find with Nissan is a close collaboration, with the most notable aspect of its relationship with McLaren having been how competitive both outfits were.

"With a motorsports legacy lasting over 80 years and multiple wins and championships across a diverse range of categories including the current Formula E world drivers’ championship, Nissan has more than proven its pedigree at the highest echelons of the sport," said Roger Griffiths, Andretti team principal. 

"As an early pioneer of electric vehicles, Nissan has developed vast knowledge in this category and through their time in Formula E have shown how immensely competitive they can be.
