Nissan become first manufacturer to commit to Formula E Gen4 era

Nissan has become the first manufacturer to commit to the Gen4 era of Formula E, and will remain in the category until at least 2030.

The Japanese manufacturer's announcement comes ahead of this weekend's inaugural Tokyo E-Prix, dubbed as the biggest race in the sport's history.

They joined Formula E at the start of the Gen2 era in Season 5, and are currently a Gen3 powertrain manufacturer – McLaren are their customer team.

Gen4 will be introduced in Season 13 (2026/27), and Nissan are delighted that they will be part of it.

“We’re extremely pleased to continue our involvement in Formula E until 2030," said Nissan's CEO Makoto Uchida.

"In addition to bringing excitement and an on-track spectacle to our fans, our participation in the series will make a significant contribution to our electrification goals set out in our Ambition 2030 plans.

"The technological breakthroughs that we make on the track will provide great insights to the development of our future products. We’re excited to see the future of electric racing unfold and to keep working towards a sustainable world for everyone.”

Nissan remaining 'vital'

With Nissan committing to at least 2030, their involvement in Formula E will stretch to 12 years.

Remaining in the all-electric series supports the Japanese manufacturer's 'Ambition 2030' project, which will see them introduce 34 new electrified models prior to the end of the current decade.

'We can't wait to continue'

Nissan has made an exceptional start to Season 10 and have made significant improvements in their efficiency. They claimed their first victory a fortnight ago in São Paulo, courtesy of McLaren driver Sam Bird.

In total, the Le Mans-based side has one pole position and three podiums to their name this year, in what is looking set to be their best in Formula E. Already, though, Nissan are looking to the future.

“I’m delighted to confirm our long-term future in Formula E as a manufacturer," said team principal Tommaso Volpe. "We’re also proud to be the first company to sign up until 2030, which is a big year for Nissan as we aim to match or exceed the targets set out in our Ambition 2030 pledge.

"Formula E is an incredible testing ground for new electric technology, and we can’t wait to continue to develop and compete until at least the end of Season 16. The team is on an upward trajectory, and our new headquarters will contribute massively to future growth, with advanced facilities helping us to develop our car for future seasons.
