Lando Norris stuns Kimi Antonelli to steal sizzling Spanish GP pole

Lando Norris stunned Kimi Antonelli at the end of Spanish Grand Prix qualifying to steal pole position by just 0.011s. 

Norris, who missed all of FP2 with a gearbox issue, placed only sixth after the first runs in Q3, with Lewis Hamilton holding provisional pole ahead of Antonelli and George Russell. 

However, on his final flying lap, Norris posted a 1:31.824 lap, just 0.011s faster than Antonelli, who had taken provisional pole from Hamilton. 

Hamilton himself found only 0.066s on his second flying lap and slipped to fourth as Max Verstappen nipped ahead. 

It is Norris's third pole of the season, with Charles Leclerc in fifth, and George Russell down in sixth, having been third after the first Q3 runs.

After the first runs in Q3, Hamilton's 1:32.079s was good enough to hold provisional pole from Antonelli on a 1:32.140 and Norris on a 1:32.525 down in sixth place. 

Antonelli initially then found 0.244s to move up to provisional pole as Russell's challenge faltered, leaving the door open for Norris. 

He found 0.701s on his second lap, which he labelled as "one of the best laps" of his career. 

It was 0.011s faster than Antonelli, with Verstappen in third, ahead of Hamilton in fourth, who found only less than a tenth of improvement on his second run. 

Leclerc was fifth, ahead of Russell with Oscar Piastri, Liam Lawson, Franco Colapinto, and Arvid Lindblad rounding out the top 10. 

Gasly fails to equal Monza heroics

The big story in Q2 was the elimination of Italian GP pole-sitter Pierre Gasly. 

Gasly, who like team-mate Colapinto had just a single run at the end of the segment, could only place 14th, nearly seven-tenths slower than Colapinto, who was eighth. 

Nico Hulkenberg led the Audi's, but dropped out by 0.019s as Lindblad got through, with Gabriel Bortoleto slotting in behind his team-mate.

Esteban Ocon was 13th ahead of Gasly in 14th, with Yuki Tsunoda and Alex Albon completing the eliminees in 15th and 16th. 

Up front, Verstappen topped the segment from Antonelli and Hamilton. 

Double Spanish disappointment in Q1 in Madrid

Following his FP3 accident earlier in the day, Oliver Bearman was ruled out of qualifying, meaning just five cars were eliminated in Q1. 

It was a double Spanish disappointment following the segment, as Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso were both eliminated.

Sainz fell just 0.005s from safety, dropping team-mate Albon into the drop-zone. 

Both Cadillacs also fell, with Sergio Perez out-qualifying Valtteri Bottas once again, as Bearman and Lance Stroll failed to set a lap-time.

Stroll was set to start at the rear regardless, owing to power unit component changes.

Up front, Russell topped the segment from Antonelli and Lawson, as Verstappen, Hamilton, and Leclerc all got through by using the medium tyres.
