Schumacher completes McLaren F1 test

The Mercedes reserve driver drove the McLaren MCL35M in Portugal.

Mick Schumacher has completed a test day with McLaren at Portimão as his quest to return to the F1 grid continues. The German joined Mercedes as reserve driver over the winter having been dropped by Haas after two years with the American-owned team. As part of his role, Schumacher also acts as a reserve driver for McLaren should Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri be unfit to race. The TPC [Testing of Previous Cars] run - in the MCL35M from 2021 - at the former Portuguese Grand Prix venue allowed Schumacher to get up to speed with the Woking-based outfit's trackside operations, should he need to step in during the course of the season. McLaren regularly tests old machinery between a rotating list of drivers, with IndyCar stars Patricio O'Ward, Alex Palou and Colton Herta all having driven for the team in recent years. In a social media post, the team said: "Mick's with us today! "Mick, who is our reserve F1 driver, is testing our 2021 MCL35M with the team in Portimão. "Joining Mick are some of our mechanic and engineering apprentices and interns, gaining valuable experience working in a trackside environment." The test was Schumacher's second run in F1 machinery this year having completed a Pirelli tyre test for Mercedes last month. Schumacher will also take to the Goodwood Festival of Speed later in July to drive his father Michael's Mercedes W02.
