Mercedes is expecting their cars to be stronger at Singapore, despite some drivers saying the bumpy circuit will be challenging in the new 2022 cars. The Silver Arrows have been one of the teams that has suffered most from the porpoising aerodynamic effect, particularly at street circuits such as Baku where Lewis Hamilton was seen clutching his back after finishing the race. Speaking in their Italian Grand Prix debrief video , Mercedes Technical Director Mike Elliott said that while the track will "provide its challenges" the tight and twisty nature might play into their strengths. “I think when you look back at the learning we have gathered over the season I think we expect that Singapore will be a bit more like we've seen in Budapest and Zandvoort," he said. "It's a bumpy circuit which is going to provide its challenges but in terms of the nature of the corners we think it could be a bit better for our car. So, hopefully we will have a good result there. "As always with all the pre-simulation work we need to do, we will maximise our learning in the practice sessions and hopefully we turn that into a good result over the weekend.”
Mercedes want to fight for P2 in championship
As for Mercedes' goals for the rest of the season, Elliott believes they could fight Ferrari for second in the Constructors' championship if they can win a race in the remaining six. “We want to try and fight Ferrari for that P2 position, we want to try and win a race this season or multiple races ideally. "But most of all we want to get ourselves back on track so we are fighting properly for a championship next year. "That's not any disrespect to our opposition, we've got fantastic opposition but that's what we really need to do because we want to be back there, we want to be challenging for championships because that's what we are about.”
