McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has laid down the seriousness with which he is treating the latest on-track collision between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

In the closing stages of the Sprint race in Singapore, Norris attempted to pass Piastri up the inside of Turn 5, but spun the Australian off and into the barriers whilst the pair were battling over fourth and fifth places.

Piastri was forced out of the Sprint on the spot, with Norris recovering to take eighth place and earn one single - a loss of eight points from the nine it was set to bank through a four-five finish, with the stewards ultimately deciding against taking further action against either driver.

Post-Sprint, Stella and McLaren CEO Zak Brown initially declined to give media interviews, and held talks with both drivers over the breach of the team's papaya rules - which were tested at the Singapore Grand Prix in 2025 when Piastri was furious with Norris's barging past at Turn 3 on the opening lap.

McLaren could have extended its lead over Red Bull to 19 points with a four-five finish and Max Verstappen's victory, but given the eight points Red Bull hauled in, coupled with the one for McLaren, the gap was reduced to 11 with the defending champions on 317 points compared to 306 for the resurgent Red Bull.

Reflecting in his traditional end-of-day media briefing, Stella stressed the seriousness of what Norris and Piastri had done, given the tight battle with Red Bull.

"It is serious because the damage to the team is material," Stella told media, including RacingNews365.

"We are in a close fight in the championship. We had the ambition to challenge Ferrari, and this is a problem in the challenge to the second position. And we have an ambition to finish ahead of Red Bull, and this is a problem to finish ahead of Red Bull.

"It is also serious because we come from a few seasons in which we have reflected together, team and drivers, as to how we approach racing together and how we make sure that the interest of the team is protected.

"It is serious, but at the same time, we approach it with a very constructive mindset, because there's only one outcome: the team will be more united, and the team will be stronger in the way we pursue our quest, which is the drivers' and the team's quests together.

"It is different to say there's any half-full glass here. There isn't at all. The glass is empty because when two McLarens make contact in that way and cause material damage, there's a significant flaw."

McLaren's main beacon

Stella then added that his overriding emotion was one of disappointment but not surprise, but conceded that after a long career in F1, "these things can happen."

"If anything, I am disappointed. Disappointed as a team principal about a situation that is absolutely not acceptable because it caused material damage to the team, and every member of the team knows that the team interest comes before any personal interest," he said.

"But above all, it is the main beacon that guides our action and our instinct. So, not necessarily surprised because I spent so many seasons in Formula 1 and I know that these things can happen.

"But we, as a team, need to reflect on how we make sure that these situations do not happen anymore."
