Max Verstappen has described how he was "surviving" in the Hungarian Grand Prix after a key overtake on Lewis Hamilton.
After the Ferrari had undercut the Red Bull for a net third place after the first stops, Verstappen scythed past Hamilton at Turn 1, akin to the 2024 clash, but crucially got ahead and forced Hamilton into another strategy.
Hamilton pitted early for the second stop with Verstappen building an off-set, and eventually finished in second after not stopping under the late VSC for Oscar Piastri's stricken McLaren, whereas Hamilton did with Verstappen catching him.
Hamilton eventually finished fifth after a pit-lane speeding penalty, with Verstappen describing the key moments of his race.
"I didn't expect to be on the podium today, but we worked hard for it," Verstappen explained.
"I think the start was decent, you know, to get through Turns 1 and 2, and then after the first stop to get back ahead of Lewis under braking into Turn 1, I was just trying to survive on the compounds, trying to make the right calls with the strategy as well.
"So I am very happy to be second here.
"I saw the opportunity as my only one, and yeah, I just went for it," he said of the Hamilton move.
"We're good on the brakes, so that helped, so it was all under control."
