Max Verstappen has revealed some disagreements within Red Bull about his set-up choices ahead of a record-breaking Italian Grand Prix qualifying.
Verstappen set the fastest lap in F1 history at Monza to steal pole position away from Lando Norris, who was also under the previous fastest benchmark, set by Lewis Hamilton in 2020 qualifying.
Verstappen has enjoyed a quiet weekend at Monza, not placing within the top three in any practice session, before peaking to snatch a fifth pole of the season, and 45th for Red Bull, breaking Sebastian Vettel's team record of 44.
After his stunning lap, Verstappen explained how minor set-up tweaks were key to his result, but ones which raised some questions within the team.
"Before we went into qualifying, we had [disagreements] in the team," Verstappen told media, including RacingNews365.
"Some wanted to do something different in terms of setup, but I said: 'No, we have to do this.'
"When I walked away and went back to my [driver room], I saw a few more people doubting the setup we wanted to do.
"To me, it just felt like: 'We have to do that,' and luckily it worked.
"In the end, of course, you make that decision with a lot of people, with [engineer] Gianpiero Lambiase and the people around me, but I also understood that there were certain questions being asked, why we might want to do something different.
"But I'm the one who sits in the car and still senses certain things. I trusted that adjusting a few more little things would make the car better."
