Max Verstappen reacts to 'lucky' lap for Nordschleife pole

Max Verstappen has conceded he was “lucky” to take pole position for the NLS2 race around the Nordschleife. 

Verstappen stuck his Mercedes GT3 car at the top of the timesheet with a 7m 51s lap time, which was two seconds faster than the competition.

However, at the end of the session, rival teams and drivers were unable to offer a counterattack due to a 'code 60', meaning they had to slow in a particular section of the track to 60 km/h.

Reacting to his qualifying effort, Verstappen said: "I was a bit lucky with the traffic.

"I think it was also the only lap without a code 60. The feeling in the car is good. 

“Of course, I still need to gain more experience with the car. But I must say: Friday was a very good day and the sun is shining, so that's very nice.

"I love the GT3 cars, and then to drive a 24-hour race here.... I've already watched a lot of them, and this year, of course, I'm going to do it myself. 

“The feeling of driving on this circuit is always very special.”

Verstappen is now hoping to walk away from the day with a victory in hand, but understands there are elements he needs to adapt to.

"For me it's also about the pit stops, because of course in Formula 1 you don't have driver changes,” he said. 

“So I need some more experience in that as well."

When asked if he would be behind the wheel for the race start, Verstappen added: “We'll see!”
