Max Verstappen has responded to the tragic passing of Juha Miettinen at the Nordschleife, where the four-time F1 drivers' champion is competing this weekend.
The German driver was killed in a seven-car crash that occurred 25 minutes into the four-hour 24 Hours of Nurburgring Qualifiers Race 1.
The 66-year-old's death was confirmed in a press conference at 20:00 local time, just over two hours after the incident took place.
The FIA, BMW, for whom Miettinen raced, and Mercedes led the messages of condolence, and Verstappen shared his own thoughts soon after.
The Red Bull driver posted to his Instagram story, writing: "Shocked by what happened today...
"Motorsport is something we all love, but in times like this, it is a reminder of how dangerous it can be.
"Sending my heartfelt condolences to Juha's family and loved ones."
Verstappen did not get behind the wheel of the #3 Mercedes during the race, as team-mate Lucas Auer began the event.
