Max Verstappen is set to make his first competitive appearance on the Nordschleife in Mercedes machinery this weekend, as he prepares for a major GT3 campaign later this year.
The 28-year-old will contest NLS2 as part of his build-up to the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, joining forces with Lucas Auer, Dani Juncadella and Jules Gounon in a strong line-up targeting outright victory.
Verstappen has long stated his intention to contest a preparatory race ahead of the Nürburgring 24 Hours, but that plan carries added significance in 2026 following a key change in machinery.
The Dutchman has switched from Ferrari to the Mercedes-AMG GT3, with Verstappen Racing now operating as a factory-supported Mercedes-AMG outfit.
Having previously raced only sparingly in Germany with Ferrari machinery, Verstappen still faces a learning curve. While he has completed several test outings in the Mercedes, NLS2 will mark his first experience of the car on the Nordschleife in a competitive environment.
The event provides a crucial benchmark for both driver and team, offering insight into performance levels and areas for refinement ahead of the 24-hour race. The Nordschleife’s unique demands make track time particularly valuable in understanding car behaviour and setup requirements.
Verstappen Racing’s switch to Mercedes-AMG is understood to be a calculated move. The GT3 model is well-established, with a proven baseline that offers consistency and predictability for engineers and drivers alike.
It is widely regarded as a stable and forgiving platform, with strong tyre management and reliability — key attributes in endurance racing.
As such, Verstappen’s focus during NLS2 will be on fine-tuning the car to suit both his own preferences and those of his team-mates. Achieving the right balance across a four-driver line-up is essential in endurance competition, and the Mercedes package is seen as well-suited to that challenge.
While Verstappen’s competitive instincts remain intact, the primary objective this weekend is preparation. The ultimate target remains the Nürburgring 24 Hours in May, where Verstappen Racing aims to deliver a fully optimised package.
