Max Verstappen offered a sarcastic view of the new mandatory two-stop rule in the Monaco Grand Prix, by joking that next season's event should feature "four stops".
In an attempt to increase the excitement during the race at the Circuit de Monaco, a new rule was introduced which meant all drivers had to complete two pit stops.
Unfortunately, it failed to improve the spectacle, with overtaking having remained impossible at the iconic venue.
Verstappen started in fourth and did lead portions of the race; however, it was only due to completing his pit stops after his rivals. In the end, he had to settle for the same position he started in.
When asked for his thoughts on the race by select media, including RacingNews365, Verstappen joked: "Very exciting. I was on the edge of my seat every lap. So you're really pushing, it was fantastic.
"We had nothing to lose. We had a big gap behind so, yeah, when I read it was like, 45-50 seconds or something, yeah, there's not much [you can do].
"You can pit, of course, and then you just drive by yourself, or you just hope that something happens and you get lucky. That didn't come with us. I was not really, too, I don't know, I just, my emotions were very neutral."
The top four on the grid finished exactly where they started, with most of the movement in the bottom half of the top 10 having been created due to Fernando Alonso retiring.
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner outlined that Monaco's "fundamental problem" remains the circuit layout, with the current F1 cars being unable to overtake.
Verstappen joked that the mandatory number of pit stops could be doubled, as it would have had no impact on his finishing result.
"I mean, maybe next year, four stops?" questioned Verstappen. "I could have done four stops, I would have still been P4. So, yeah, for us at least up front, It didn't do anything."
