Max Verstappen claimed the opening day of the Italian Grand Prix featured "treacherous" sessions, due to how many cars went off circuit and threw gravel onto the track.
Red Bull entered Friday with memories of last season's disaster at Monza, where Verstappen described the car at the time as an "undrivable monster".
However, in a major boost to the Milton Keynes-based outfit's chances this weekend, the four-time world champion ended second practice pleased with the RB21.
He ended FP2 sixth on the timesheets, but within two-tenths of pacesetter Lando Norris.
Both Ferrari and Red Bull appear to be within striking distance of McLaren, although the Woking-based team could be hiding its true performance.
In one final bid to compete with McLaren, Red Bull has introduced an upgrades package for the Italian GP, featuring a new floor and front wing.
Based on Verstappen's opening day performance, it would appear the updates have been a success, with the Dutchman now looking ahead to qualifying on Saturday.
"It was a pretty reasonable Friday," said Verstappen. "We are a bit more competitive and I am reasonably happy with the car.
Verstappen continued: "The sessions today were treacherous with a lot of cars going off and throwing gravel onto the track, but overall it was a decent Friday."
