Max Verstappen made a bizarre mistake following the conclusion of first practice ahead of this weekend's Dutch Grand Prix.
The four-time world champion completed a practice start as his home fans watched on at Zandvoort, before locking up at Turn 1 and beaching his Red Bull.
Unable to escape the gravel, Verstappen was forced to jump out of his RB21, which had to be recovered by marshals and returned to the team before second practice.
Verstappen ended the first session since the F1 summer break sixth on the timesheets, almost a full second adrift of pacesetter Lando Norris.
It wasn’t only Verstappen who made a bizarre error at Zandvoort. Red Bull’s other driver Yuki Tsunoda spun at Turn 10 early in the session but managed to avoid getting stuck in the gravel.
The same couldn’t be said for Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, who beached his W16 and triggered a red flag almost 15 minutes into the session.
For Verstappen’s home race, Red Bull has fitted both of its drivers with a new front wing in its latest attempt to boost performance.
