Max Verstappen has detailed his "hope" in having a strong start to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, as he looks to complete a staggering McLaren title upset.
Having been 104 points adrift of the championship lead after Zandvoort, Verstappen enters the season final just 12 points behind Lando Norris.
It is a three-way title fight at the Yas Marina Circuit, as Oscar Piastri is four points adrift of Verstappen.
Should the Dutchman stun McLaren and clinch the title, he would match Michael Schumacher's record of five consecutive drivers' championships.
However, the Red Bull driver does expect McLaren to have better overall pace, and is "relying" on a bit of chaos in the final round of the campaign.
Asked what his expectations are for the season finale, Verstappen said: "I have no idea. I mean, again, I hope that we start the weekend well. Let’s say like that.
"That would help a lot. I think on pure pace, it will be tough, but a race like [Qatar] also shows that it's not always straightforward, a grand prix, and a lot of things can happen. So I’m probably relying a little bit on that."
Verstappen finds himself in the unusual position of being the driver not leading the championship, although it is a scenario he is relishing.
The 28-year-old is eager to get going in Abu Dhabi and recognises the importance of his team making the right strategic calls, just like in Qatar.
"I'm excited. I mean, I'm happy to go there and have a go at it. But like I said before, you need to also be realistic, that I think on pure pace, we’re not at the same level.
"But at the same time, when strategy maybe comes into play or making the right calls at the right time, we might have the opportunity."
