Formula E has officially confirmed the return of pit stops, which will be introduced from next month's double-header in Jeddah.
Known as Pit Boost, all drivers will have to pit once during select races to receive a 10% energy increase (3.85kWh).
The energy increase will be supplied by a 600kW energy boost, which will see a charger plugged into the back of each car when it stops at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit next month.
According to FE, each car will be stationary for 34 seconds, with one concern amongst many being that it could put drivers a lap behind at certain venues.
This is because only one driver from each team can pit at a time, increasing the difficulty in strategic planning.
The system was supped to be introduced at the start of the Gen3 era in 2023, but faced multiple setbacks.
Now, the all-electric championship and the FIA are confident the mid-race feature can be introduced, following positive testing results of the equipment in Madrid, São Paulo and Mexico.
For now, Pit Boost will only be used during one race of a double-header weekend, with the teams to be informed at least 21 days ahead of a Pit Boost race which laps pitting will be legal.
FE co-founder Alberto Longo confirmed to RacingNews365 and other select media during a virtual roundtable that Pit Boost's presence for the rest of the season will be decided on the success of its implementation in Jeddah.
Longo insisted that the technology is reliable; however, should it fail, then the FIA's head of FE Pablo Martino revealed that each team will have a spare booster, with a further two boosters being available in the paddock should even the spares fail.
It is a big move by FE, but one which highlights the progress EV technology has made given pit stops were last required in Gen1 to change cars.
“After an extensive testing and simulation process, we’re pleased to finally present this game-changing technology to the world," said Longo.
"It marks one of the most ambitious and impactful additions not just to our series, but modern day motorsport. Pit Boost will challenge teams and drivers alike to make high-stakes decisions under intense pressure.
"The potential for dramatic overtakes, unexpected twists, and human ingenuity will elevate the excitement for our fans and showcase Formula E and the FIA’s relentless commitment to innovation.
"As a series born to enhance the technology transfer from the race track to the road, it marks a step change for consumer vehicles and the future potential of EV performance. "
