The nine drivers who sat out FP1 at the Mexico City Grand Prix for rookies will return to their respective cockpits for the second hour of running at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
The opening salvo was a quiet show led by Charles Leclerc. Oscar Piastri, the only F1 drivers' title protagonist to take part in the session, was only fourth-fastest.
Max Verstappen and Lando Norris will want to eradicate their disadvantage to the Australian — both this weekend and in the championship race — as quickly as possible, giving consequence to FP2.
Whilst it will be run three hours later than the grand prix start on Sunday, it will be the most representative practice hour for teams and drivers to dial in their cars.
Given the considerable altitude in Mexico City, grip is low, making all running critical. With the air thin to the extent oxygen is 20 percent lower than normal, cars are run to Monaco-spec set-ups, but only get Monza-level downforce.
