Lando Norris set an impressive lap time to head the field at the end of free practice, sitting well over four-tenths of his nearest rival.
It was the Briton who secured sprint pole position 12 months ago in China and the McLaren driver will be looking to take it once again and continue his strong momentum from the season-opening round in Australia.
Max Verstappen did not show his true pace during practice, while team-mate Liam Lawson struggled to extract pace from his Red Bull.
Ferrari, meanwhile, had a more encouraging session with Leclerc and Hamilton finishing second and fourth respectively.
