Liam Lawson to be 'more aware' after Racing Bulls team orders tension

Liam Lawson was furious during the Austrian Grand Prix, but now at Silverstone, the Racing Bulls driver has taken a more retrospective view of the fallout from the team orders confusion with Arvid Lindblad.

Liam Lawson expects he will be "more aware" of Arvid Lindblad when running close to his Racing Bulls team-mate in the future, after their team orders flashpoint at the Austrian Grand Prix.

However, the New Zealander insists his approach will not change following the intra-team tensions that flared during the 71-lap race in Spielberg.

The Racing Bulls pair clashed at the Red Bull Ring last weekend after Arvid Lindblad ignored a "hold position" instruction and overtook Lawson for ninth place, despite being told not to attack his team-mate, who was managing overheating brakes.

Lawson, who is enjoying a strong start to the season and has scored 30 points in the opening eight rounds of the campaign, reacted furiously on team radio after being told the Briton would not attempt a move.

The 24-year-old told his engineer, Alexandre Iliopoulos, it was the "last f***ing time" he would listen to such instructions, having lifted off by around 50 metres only to be passed by Lindblad in a robust move that squeezed him towards the gravel.

The team ultimately corrected the situation via pit strategy, giving Lawson the undercut at the second round of stops. He rejoined ahead and held position to finish ninth, with Lindblad P10, securing a double-points haul.

Team principal Alan Permane came on the radio during the cooldown lap to tell Lawson to "be cool" and that the matter would be resolved internally.

'All sorted'

Speaking at Silverstone ahead of the British Grand Prix, Lawson addressed the incident and the post-race talks, suggesting it was largely between the team and Lindblad.

"It honestly wasn't really much to do with me, and it's something that, for me, was resolved in the race; I got my position back, so honestly, by the time we finished the race, I was completely fine," Lawson told media, including RacingNews365.

"It's something that is obviously part of Formula 1, being in a big organisation and a team, so I just tried to do my part in the race, and it was more of their discussion than mine."

When asked whether the debrief amounted to sitting Lindblad down and reinforcing that instructions must be followed, Lawson simply replied: "Yeah."

Lindblad, for his part, confirmed in the FIA drivers' press conference that the matter had been discussed after the race and was now "all sorted."

Though Lawson was keen to move on, he conceded the experience would make him more cautious in similar circumstances.

"Maybe I'll be more aware, but it's not something that we really... I didn't really think too much about it afterwards, honestly," he said.

"For me, I'm not going to change my approach. Maybe I'll be more aware in a situation like that. I think also it can be quite rare that you're in a specific situation like that. So it's very unlikely, but maybe I will be more aware of that."
