Liam Lawson has stated Racing Bulls was “lucky” to emerge from the São Paulo Grand Prix with points following a last-lap collision with team-mate Isack Hadjar.
Lawson was running in seventh place as the race entered its final stages, heading a long train of cars including Hadjar behind.
On the final lap of the race, Hadjar launched an attack on Lawson and the pair rubbed wheels at the opening corner in a nerve-wrecking moment for the team.
However, the team-mates escaped without damage and crossed the line in seventh and eighth respectively.
“He was going for a move,” Lawson told Sky F1, reflecting on the incident.
“It's the type of corner that's that obviously curves in, he's obviously trying to try and clear me before the braking, I think he just misjudged it.
“But obviously we both came out of it, so it was okay. And more importantly, for the team to have two cars seventh and eighth is great today.”
The strong result for Racing Bulls allowed it to stretch out its gap to Aston Martin in the constructors' championship to 10 points as it looks to end the year in sixth place.
Although it almost failed to bring home the result, Lawson is not frustrated by Hadjar's attempt.
“It’s the last lap of a race. Honestly, I think there's no way that the team can expect or anybody can expect [different],” he said.
“As much as it's the ideal thing to do, there’s no way that we're not going to race for a position like that.
“So I respect that we're lucky that we came out of it, but it's been a great weekend for the team.”
