Liam Lawson has called for his Racing Bulls team to opt for a radical strategy to rescue a points finish in the British Grand Prix.
Lawson finished inside the top 10 in each of the free practice sessions at Silverstone, but was eliminated in 16th place in Q1 during qualifying.
The New Zealander will actually start 15th owing to Oliver Bearman's 10-place grid penalty, but faces a tough order to score points in consecutive races for the first time following a stand-out sixth place last time out in Austria.
Lawson believes that if Racing Bulls adopt a conventional strategy, which Pirelli believes to be a two-stopper, it will not be able to score points.
"I think we have to," Lawson told media, including RacingNews365, when asked if the team had to do something different on strategy to rescue points.
"We have to manage tyres, but we are going to have to try and move forward, we are a long way back.
"So a standard strategy is going to be quite tough, it is not the easiest to overtake, so we are going to need something to happen, or have a slightly different strategy to make something work."
As for where the strong practice pace disappeared to, Lawson was puzzled as he also addressed the minor off at Stowe, which cost him a Q2 berth to Gasly.
"It is [to do with] tyres, but it is very sensitive, and the temperature dropped, and I didn't do anything crazy, but just had no grip, I was sliding," Lawson added.
"It is a shame, there are cooler temperatures [compared to Friday], and the wind has been there all weekend, so it is nothing new.
"Our speed has been much further up this weekend, so losing a tenth [at Stowe] shouldn't be the difference, but unfortunately, that is what happened."
