Liam Lawson airs frustration after shock F1 turnaround

Liam Lawson has aired his frustration at his surprise lack of pace in the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, which allowed Alpine to beat Racing Bulls.

The New Zealander started eighth in Spain, and, on the road, was in ninth place before a penalty for Franco Colapinto allowed Lawson to climb back to where he started, albeit behind the lead Alpine driver, Pierre Gasly, who was seventh.

In qualifying, the two Alpines only managed to take 13th and 14th, and were six-tenths slower than Lawson in Q2, which added to his surprise at being overtaken by both on the road.

"It was good, but we struggled; the speed was not really there," Lawson told media, including RacingNews365.

"It is something for us to review. We had a very strong pace in qualifying, but weren't as strong in the race.

"We knew that the tyres were going to be very hard here, but after how quick we were [on Saturday], we probably expected to be in front of [Alpine].

"It wasn't ideal, I probably pushed a little bit too hard in the opening laps to try and stay in front of Nico [Hulkenberg] and then we lost another spot to Franco with a slightly slow second stop.

"So it is frustrating, but ultimately, we didn't have the speed anyway."
