Lewis Hamilton's race-ending crash in the Dutch Grand Prix caught the seven-time world champion by "complete surprise", with it marking a "painful" retirement.

Hamilton had settled into the race behind George Russell in seventh, before crashing on the exit of the banked Turn 3 on lap 23.

The 40-year-old lost the rear of his SF-25 after touching the paint on the high edge of the banked corner, which had become slippery due to light drizzle.

He attempted to correct the moment but was left helpless as his left-front made heavy contact with the wall, resulting in significant damage.

Hamilton's crash occurred just a matter of seconds after suggesting that Ferrari should pit him early, in a bid to get ahead of Russell.

Discussing having called for the undercut moments before the crash, Hamilton told select media including RacingNews365: "Yeah, no I didn't really want the undercut necessarily, at that time.

"I was just saying that we would have to probably try and undercut them at some point.

"But it was more I wanted to go long, my tyres were still feeling good. It just took me by complete surprise, what just happened there. I lost the rear end up the bank, and that was it."

The Briton's crash was a difficult way to end what had been a better weekend for the 105-time race winner, with Hamilton having felt that progress had been made.

Due to having felt more positive in the car, the retirement at Zandvoort felt more frustrating for the veteran.

"Apart from that, it's been a really solid weekend," added Hamilton. "And we made lots of... I felt like I made progress, just overall approach and everything.

"And so to come away with nothing is definitely painful."
