Lewis Hamilton smashes British Grand Prix record by taking advantage of well-timed safety car

Lewis Hamilton has now won the British Grand Prix, but his triumph at Silverstone in 2019 wrote his name in the F1 history books.

Seven years ago today, on 14 July 2019, Lewis Hamilton delivered a masterclass in opportunism and tyre management to clinch a record-breaking sixth British Grand Prix victory, surpassing the mark of five shared by Jim Clark and Alain Prost.

The 10th round of that season's championship began with team-mate Valtteri Bottas on pole by a mere 0.006 seconds, setting the stage for an intense intra-team duel at Silverstone.

The pair traded blows in the opening laps, Hamilton briefly snatching the lead on lap four before Bottas muscled his way back ahead.

As the two Silver Arrows pulled clear of the field, it appeared Bottas had the measure of his team-mate.

The decisive moment arrived on Lap 19, when Antonio Giovinazzi's Alfa Romeo spun into the gravel at Vale, triggering a safety car.

By that point, Bottas had already completed his pit stop under green flag conditions, committing to a two-stop strategy.

Hamilton, still on his original tyres and running in clean air, dived into the pits under caution for what amounted to a free stop. He rejoined in the lead and never looked back.

From there, Hamilton controlled the race with consummate ease, stretching a gap of 24.928 seconds over Bottas and, for good measure, posting the fastest lap on his final tour, a 1:27.369, on rubber that was roughly 30 laps old.

"I can't tell you how proud I am to be here in front of my home crowd, seeing so many British flags out there," Hamilton said afterwards. "You would think you would get used to something like that, but it feels like the first time."

Chaos behind the Mercedes pair

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc completed the podium in third, but the real drama unfolded further back.

Sebastian Vettel misjudged his braking at Stowe on Lap 37 and rear-ended Max Verstappen, spinning both cars. Verstappen recovered to fifth; Vettel received a 10-second penalty and limped home P16.

Earlier, Haas team-mates Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen had made contact on the opening lap, both retiring before lap 10 in an incident that famously left team principal Guenther Steiner fuming.

Pierre Gasly took a solid fourth for Red Bull, while Carlos Sainz scored sixth for McLaren.

Hamilton left Silverstone leading the championship on 223 points, 39 clear of Bottas, with Mercedes dominant atop the constructors' standings. It was his seventh win from 10 rounds in a season that would yield a sixth F1 drivers' title.
