Lewis Hamilton is under investigation after allegedly impeding another driver at Turn 9 during second practice for the Malaysian Grand Prix.
The Ferrari driver will meet with the stewards once the session concludes at Sepang, with the incident flagged during a chaotic middle stage of FP2.
Turn 9 marks the end of the short straight that exists in the middle sector, with plenty of space on the left side of the track to pull over and let a driver by.
However, during FP2, Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto felt that he was impeded by the seven-time champion, voicing his frustration over team radio.
“What the fuck is this guy doing, man?”
After being informed that Hamilton was on a cool-down lap, Bortoleto replied: “I know, but he sees me coming and he just keeps blocking.”
However, it then emerged that Hamilton seemingly had an issue with his mirror, telling his team: “I can’t see through my right mirror, so keep me up to date.”
Under FIA guidelines, impeding offences committed in free practice are treated differently to those in qualifying or the race, since lap times set in the session carry no sporting consequence.
Stewards typically hand out a reprimand or a warning when a driver fails to react to mirrors or radio calls, while financial penalties are instead directed at the team when the root cause is deemed to be late or inadequate messaging over the radio.
