Lewis Hamilton feared gruesome Kimi Raikkonen repeat after hitting mechanic

Lewis Hamilton had a close call with a Ferrari mechanic during the Belgian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton has stated he feared one of his Ferrari mechanics had suffered a significant injury after a coming together in the pit lane.

Hamilton served his one and only pit stop of the race midway through the event, during which he served a five-second time penalty for colliding with George Russell on the opening lap.

When the light turned green and Hamilton was dropped from the jacks, a mechanic was still situated in front of the Ferrari car.

The mechanic was struck as Hamilton moved away, before the seven-time champion stopped while his colleague recovered off the ground.

Hamilton detailed his mind flashed back to the 2018 British Grand Prix, when a Ferrari mechanic suffered a broken leg after being hit by Kimi Raikkonen.

“In the last stint, we didn't get to put the front wing in because of the double stack,” Hamilton told media including RacingNews365

“And then, oh God, I'm just grateful he didn't get hurt, my mechanic.  I'm looking at the lights and I'm supposed to go when the car is dropping.

“I went, and then I saw him to my right, and I stopped as soon as I could.

“All I could think at the time was back when Kimi [ran over] a leg. That's what I thought initially. But he got up and moved.”

Hamilton ended the race in fourth place, but stated he was carrying significant damage from the contact with Russell on the first lap.

“We lost a massive amount of downforce - I don't know what the numbers are, but the front left of the floor was gone.
