Lando Norris suffered a costly shunt into the barrier during the second free practice session at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
The Briton was on a qualifying simulation run as he sought to improve his previous lap time, which was good enough for third.
However, after rounding Turn 4 halfway through the session, Norris suffered a kick of oversteer and hit the wall with his left rear tyre.
Although he was able to return to the pit lane, the MCL39 was visibly injured with damage to the rear suspension.
Norris was able to return to the pit lane, albeit at a crawling pace.
It marked another setback for McLaren on a weekend it can clinch the constructors' championship, after Oscar Piastri suffered a power unit concern during FP1.
Just minutes after Norris hit the wall, Piastri also touched the barrier at Turn 15 - however he was sent back on his way after the McLaren mechanics inspected the car.
