Lando Norris dealt major 'pyschological' blow in surprise Oscar Piastri defeat

Lando Norris might have topped every practice session at the Dutch GP, but he had to settle for second on the grid behind Oscar Piastri.

1997 F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve believes Oscar Piastri's pole position at the Dutch Grand Prix was "psychologically" significant in his battle with Lando Norris.

Norris entered qualifying at Zandvoort as the narrow favourite for pole, having topped every practice session. However, he was defeated by Piastri.

The championship leader set a new lap record to secure pole by just 0.012s ahead of his teammate, despite being up to two-tenths off the pace for much of the weekend.

Villeneuve considered the Australian's pole position a pivotal moment in the championship fight, highlighting how Piastri saved his fastest lap for when it mattered most.

Discussing Norris having come out strong across all three practice sessions, Villeneuve told Sky F1: "He did, but we've been talking about the championship and what games are being played or not, and the effect it has.

"And this is important, all weekend, free practice, all through qualifying, Lando kept doing perfect lap after perfect lap.

"And Piastri was a tenth and a half, two tenths behind, that was a huge gap as a team-mate.

"And now just in that last lap that counted a few hundredths left in the first sector, and Piastri does his best lap when it matters. He got all the balls in together. Very important, psychologically."

McLaren strategic dilemma

McLaren entered qualifying having been over eight-tenths clear of the entire field in final practice, an advantage that was significantly reduced in Q3.

Max Verstappen secured third on the grid, just over two-tenths slower than Piastri, creating a potential issue for the Woking-based team.

The gap between the McLarens and the four-time world champion has left Villeneuve wondering if the team will need to sacrifice a driver to keep Verstappen behind and secure a one-two finish in the race.

"It's super close [between Piastri and Norris]," added Villeneuve. "And then when you look behind, they weren't eight tenths of a second ahead of everyone. Everyone got closer.

"Does that mean that the strategies in the race one of the drivers will have to cover Verstappen, for example?

"That's the difficulty when two team mates are fighting. When you're fighting another team, you just play an open strategy.

"When it's two teammates, the one who's leading the race out of the two has the first choice on strategy. It's a little bit complicated."
