Have McLaren outsmarted Mercedes and Red Bull?

A technical rule change in 2021 forced teams to change large parts of the rear of their car, find out how McLaren may have outsmarted both Mercedes and Red Bull.

While a major technical overhaul is set to take place in 2022, the 2021 F1 season features some changes to the floor, diffuser, and brake ducts. It appears McLaren have found a way to exploit a loophole giving them a bit of advantage during the ongoing test session. McLaren went to great lengths to hide the rear of their car during their car's launch. This led to increased speculation that the team were trying to hide something that might give them an advantage. Those suspicions have proved to be valid as the British team have found a clever workaround for the regulation changes. It appears that McLaren has extended their car's floor further back, with the MCL21 floor taking over some of the functions of the old diffuser. The cars of most other teams have floors that end's at the rear axel flowing into the rear diffuser. With the MCL21, the floor extends beyond the rear axel providing the car with extra downforce. With Daniel Ricciardo topping two of the six sessions so far, it appears McLaren might have got a leg up on the competition.
