George Russell has stated he expects Kimi Antonelli to make a step forward next year after getting over the pains of a rookie season.
Antonelli was promoted to the Mercedes squad this year in place of Lewis Hamilton and enjoyed positive opening rounds as he found his feet in F1.
However, he endured a challenging run of form in the European leg of the campaign and struggled for confidence behind the wheel.
Antonelli, as well as Russell, has been retained for the 2026 campaign despite his mixed maiden season in the series.
However, Russell is expecting the Italian to show improved form when the new season gets underway next year.
“Kimi has definitely shown signs of great speed,” Russell told media including RacingNews365.
“I think for any rookie, naturally, it's just difficult to bring that speed consistently.
“I'd expect those great showings of speed to be more regular [in 2026].
“We’ve seen some other drivers on the grid have taken a big step up from one year to the next.”
The F1 grid is preparing for a seismic change in technical regulations, which may require the car to be driven very differently from the current specification.
Looking ahead to the sport's new era, Russell added: “It’s a totally different car, totally different way of driving.
“At least myself, I'm going in with a totally open mind and have zero expectations.
“My goal is to get the most out of myself and the team.
“If my team-mate is on my pace, or two-tenths behind or four-tenths behind, it doesn't change how I approach my business.”
