George Russell joked that his recent engagement to his fiancée, Carmen Montero Mundt, helped vault him to sprint pole position at the Dutch Grand Prix.
The British driver silenced his doubters with his third sprint pole of the season, having got the better of Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc at Zandvoort.
It is the perfect start for the 28-year-old coming out of the summer break, having headed into the shutdown on a torrid run of form and with serious question marks surrounding his lack of performance compared to Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli.
During the summer hiatus, Russell shared that he had proposed to his now fiancée, and over team radio after clinching sprint pole, the seven-time grand prix winner playfully remarked that he must be lighter without the engagement ring weighing him down.
Russell's happy news has been a significant conversation point across the early part of the weekend in the Netherlands, but he was quick to return to addressing the on-track action when handed a microphone.
"It's great to be back here after the break," Russell said after getting out of his W17. "It's a circuit I really love and needs a lot of commitment.
"It was obviously a tough end to the first half of the year. We're really happy to come back. It's been a little while since I've done one of these interviews, so yeah, it was nice."
The Mercedes driver highlighted how difficult it was to weave his lap together, but was undoubtedly pleased with his effort.
"The lap felt really good, to be honest," Russell added. "It all came together nicely. It's always difficult with these sprint qualifyings, when you've just got one shot on the soft tyre.
"The track always takes a step. The grip takes a step, but it all came together nicely. The McLarens look quick, Ferrari looks quick, but really glad to pull it off when it mattered."
