Pierre Gasly has confirmed he has talked to Carlos Sainz in an effort to convince him to join Alpine next year.

Sainz is yet to confirm where he will drive beyond the end of the current campaign, with Ferrari opting to part ways with the Spaniard in favour of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Sainz has been linked to several F1 projects, including Alpine, where a vacancy has arisen following confirmation that Esteban Ocon will leave the team.

Speaking to media including RacingNews365, Gasly asserted his desire to be paired with the fastest driver available on the market.

“I think Alpine has good options on the table,” he said. “At the end of the day, it's not up to me, I welcome the fastest guy out there.

“We all know who it is. At the moment, we have got to wait but the team has three good options.”

When asked if he has spoken to Sainz, Gasly replied: “I did my fair share of the job!

“But ultimately, I believe in the project we're building with Alpine. I will always back the team up. Now it's up to him to make his own decision.”

Gasly awaiting upgrades to improve F1 pace

Gasly enters the round from Hungary this weekend looking to bounce back from a difficult event last time out in Great Britain.

After qualifying at the back of the grid, Gasly failed to take the start due to a gearbox issue that occurred pre-race.

When asked what he needs from the car to return to the points, Gasly said: “First to take the start and actually race!

“Then I think the car itself, we know where we are. We haven't really developed over the last few races.

“So we know we have to maximise it. Others like Haas, for example, are making quite big steps forward and it's so tight in the midfield that it kind of reshuffles the order every time a team brings a new part.

“I think we know we got to try, it's not easy to score points until we get new upgrades on the car which hopefully will put us a bit more in the fight.”
