The FIA has confirmed Niels Wittich is no longer serving as the F1 race director.

Wittich took over the role at the start of the 2022 season on a rotational basis with Eduardo Freitas after Michael Masi left the role following the infamous 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

In the final third of the 2022 campaign, Wittich took over as the sport's sole race director.

But ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix later this month, the FIA has confirmed Rui Marques has taken over the position with Wittich stepping away to seek new opportunities.

Marques most recently served as the race director in Formula 2 and Formula 3.

“The FIA can confirm that Niels Wittich has stepped down from his position as F1 Rrce director to pursue new opportunities,” read a statement from the FIA.

“Niels has fulfilled his numerous responsibilities as race director with professionalism and dedication.

“We thank him for his commitment and we wish him the best for the future.
Rui Marques will assume the role of race director from the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

“Rui brings a wealth of experience having previously served as track marshal, scrutineer, national and international steward, deputy race director and race director in various championships.

“Most recently, he held the position of Formula 2 and Formula 3 race director.”

The race director is responsible for the safe execution of the weekend sessions and liaises with drivers over their on-track concerns.

Prior to Masi and Wittich's stints in the key FIA position, Charlie Whiting carried out race director duties for over 20 years.
