Ferrari set to benefit from new FIA regulation

The first round of Additional Development and Update Opportunities will not arrive in time for the Miami Grand Prix as originally planned.

ADUO represents the FIA's attempt to level the playing field when one power unit manufacturer establishes a commanding advantage over its rivals. The system kicks in when competitors face a performance deficit exceeding 2%, offering increased development budgets and modifications to existing power units rather than complete redesigns.

Under the regulations, ADUO allocations follow a strict six-race assessment period. Originally scheduled for implementation after the sixth, 12th, and 18th grands prix, the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian races has changed the timeline.

The FIA had initially planned to announce eligible manufacturers by Miami, with Canadian GP implementation, but the revised calendar has forced a rethink.

Whilst the governing body has yet to publish its official list of beneficiaries, paddock speculation at Suzuka pointed towards three teams likely to qualify for additional development opportunities.

Mercedes setting the benchmark

With Mercedes' W17 appearing to establish the performance standard, Ferrari, Audi, and Aston Martin are expected to meet the criteria for ADUO assistance. Red Bull Powertrains, by contrast, seems to fall within the 2% threshold and would therefore miss out on the additional development allowances.

Ferrari presents the most compelling case for ADUO benefits amongst the front-running teams. Analysis of the SF-26's early-season performance reveals the power unit as the primary weakness compared to Mercedes' W17, with deficits apparent in both energy deployment and maximum internal combustion engine output.

Maranello remains confident that targeted power unit development, combined with an aerodynamic upgrade package due as early as Miami, can substantially reduce the gap to Mercedes.

The Scuderia's situation differs markedly from its fellow ADUO candidates, as it represents the only Mercedes challenger capable of transforming additional development opportunities into genuine on-track competition.

Aston Martin faces a vastly different challenge. Rather than chasing the leaders, the Silverstone squad finds itself anchored to the grid's rear, with Honda's power unit suffering from significant pace deficits and persistent vibration issues.

Development priorities vary across teams

For Aston Martin, ADUO may provide limited immediate relief, with the team likely viewing 2026 as an extended testing programme. This approach would allow Honda to implement more fundamental power unit changes whilst building towards successful integration in the 2027 car.

Audi's debut season as a full works manufacturer has brought its own complications, but the team led by Mattia Binotto appears best positioned to maximise ADUO benefits throughout the campaign.

Rather than targeting front-running performance, the focus centres on consolidating competitive levels, aligning perfectly with their current development requirements.

The system's impact on championship contention may prove limited in the short term. Ferrari stands alone amongst Mercedes' rivals in possessing both the need for ADUO assistance and the capability to convert it into meaningful competitive gains.

Red Bull's exclusion from the programme, pending official FIA confirmation, reflects the RB22's relatively competitive power unit performance.

The team's primary concerns lie elsewhere, with weight distribution, vehicle dynamics, and aerodynamic balance representing more pressing development areas than outright power unit performance.
