Ferrari highlight crucial anomaly in Mexican 'miracle' target

Ferrari is enduring a painful F1 period with a long stretch without winning a race - can it end the drought this Sunday?

Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur has underlined the anomalous nature of the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, as the Italian team looks to prevent going a calendar year without tasting grand prix victory.

The Scuderia is the only one of the four leading teams in F1 yet to win a full-distance race in 2025, and has not had a driver visit the top step of the podium since last year's Mexico City Grand Prix, when the departed Carlos Sainz secured a superb victory.

Lewis Hamilton triumphed in the sprint at the Chinese Grand Prix, but unless the British driver or team-mate Charles Leclerc crosses the finish line first this weekend, the Maranello-based squad's drought will reach 12 months and counting.

That unwanted anniversary will fall on Monday, October 27, so this is Ferrari's last chance to avoid reaching the unfortunate milestone.

When asked by media including RacingNews365 if Ferrari can end its drought with a Mexican miracle, Vasseur replied: "Thanks for the miracle!

"But the field is very, very tight. We saw last week that it’s a matter of tenths of seconds.”

The Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez is unique due to its extremely high altitude, sitting 2,240 metres above sea level.

Teams are required to devote extra attention to ensure their cooling, providing an added challenge to Ferrari's bid to finally take to the top step of the podium.

"I think Mexico is a bit different to other tracks because you need to keep the cooling under control all over the weekend,” Vasseur stated.

"And it’s a tough job for everybody. Let’s try again. We are pushing. We are pushing as a team to come back — to try to win a race until the end of the season. And we’ll see on Sunday."
