Fernando Alonso has explained the key factors behind his decision to delay his F1 retirement and extend his stay in grand prix racing.
The two-time world champion has been weighing up whether to return for a 24th season in 2027 or to call time on an F1 career which has yielded the 2005 and 2006 drivers' titles, 32 grand prix victories, and 106 podiums so far.
Ultimately, the Spanish veteran of 440 F1 starts, has decided to stay on with Aston Martin as it looks to climb up the pecking order following a poor start to the new 2026 rules with engine partner Honda.
Alonso has scored just three points thus far in 2026 from a 10th in Monaco and a ninth in the Netherlands, with both the Aston Martin chassis and Honda engine being below expectations - but Alonso has decided to give the partnership another year.
“I'm very happy to sign a new contract with the Aston Martin,” Alonso said.
“I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level. I’m committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed.
“I truly believe in what we are building: we have strong leadership, incredible people, partners and facilities.
“I look forward to making more memories on the race track in front of the passionate fans.
“Their energy creates an atmosphere that inspires me and is what makes our sport special.”
Stroll heads into seventh season with Aston Martin
Aston Martin has also confirmed that Stroll will continue in the seat alongside Alonso, marking their fifth year together as team-mates.
Delivering his reaction to the extension, Stroll stated: “I’m very happy to continue with Aston Martin for the long term.
“I’ve been on this journey since the beginning and I believe we have the resources and the people to become a winning team.
“There is so much hard work going on at Silverstone with real progress being made, and the determination I see in every department is a huge motivation for me.
“I know we are heading in the right direction, and my commitment is stronger than ever to help us achieve our goals.”
