The start of the Formula 2 feature race has been delayed, with the formation lap now scheduled to start at 09:31 local time.
The F1 support series was meant to get racing six minutes earlier, but the inclement conditions at the Miami International Autodrome have forced the organisers' hands.
F2 is only in the Sunshine State due to the postponement of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, but it may be denied its showcase race in full due to the adverse conditions, which have included thunder and lightning already today.
Once underway, the formation lap will be completed behind the safety car.
The McLaren Trophy America race was the first support series casualty of the day. The event was due to start at 08:00 local time but was called off.
The Miami Grand Prix has been moved forward to 13:00 local time, from its scheduled time of 16:00, with the FIA and F1 trying to find a dry pocket to run what is now the fourth round of the season in.
