F1 drivers could face Austrian GP 'gamble' in hunt for race victory

The hot temperatures may well have an impact on strategy in Austria - but will anyone be willing to take a gamble?

The eighth round of the 2026 Formula 1 season brings the paddock to the Red Bull Ring, a circuit that has historically punished tyre mismanagement. 

With scorching temperatures forecast for race day, track temperatures potentially exceeding 50°C, tyre strategy promises to be the decisive factor on Sunday afternoon.

George Russell lines up on pole position for Mercedes, joined on the front row by Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari SF-26. Lewis Hamilton starts P3 and Kimi Antonelli completes the top four. Max Verstappen, whose qualifying ended in the barriers at Turn 9, is relegated to fifth.

Pirelli has brought its softest allocation to Spielberg, the C3 as the hard, C4 as the medium and C5 as the soft.

In the extreme heat forecast for Sunday, a two-stop strategy remains the most likely baseline. The cleanest approach is a medium-hard-hard, with drivers pitting first around laps 18-25 and again in the lap 45-55 window. 

It is the conservative, low-risk play, ideal for a driver leading from the front. Russell, from pole, may well view this as the path of least resistance. An alternative is the medium-hard-medium strategy, which trades end-of-race tyre life for a faster final stint, useful for closing a gap in the final laps.

For drivers starting further back, a soft-medium-hard strategy offers a more aggressive option, with the first stop arriving as early as lap 13. The boldest play is a soft-medium-hard-soft three-stopper, cycling through compounds rapidly and finishing on fresh rubber for a sprint to the flag.

Each pit stop costs approximately 20 seconds, so a three-stopper must generate roughly 20 seconds of additional pace on track, a move that has been described by Pirelli as a “gamble”.

“There is a three-stop option, again starting on the Soft, which, if well executed, could prove effective,” said Pirelli's motorsport director Dario Marrafuschi.

“By exploiting the strong undercut at Spielberg, some drivers may choose to anticipate their rivals with a very early first stop and then use all three available compounds over the remainder of the race.

“This strategy is around a couple of seconds slower when factoring in traffic and the overtaking required, but in clean air it is actually quicker than the two-stop. Some teams may therefore be willing to take the gamble. 

“After all, the memory is still fresh of how Hamilton secured victory in Barcelona with a similar move.”
