A meeting is due to take place later today of the F1 Commission, with the potential revamp of the points system to be discussed.

Over the Chinese Grand Prix weekend, it was reported that Formula 1 was exploring the possibility of restructuring how points are awarded, with the top 12 receiving points instead of the current top 10.

The belief is that the reliability and performance of the top five teams - Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes and Aston Martin - make it nearly impossible for the bottom five outfits - RB, Haas, Williams, Alpine and Stake - to score points if all 10 of the top cars finish where they should.

In China, only Lance Stroll's Aston Martin did not finish in the top 10 from the top five teams, allowing Haas's Nico Hulkenberg to score one point.

Across the first five races of the season, have scored just 12 points between them, seven for RB and five for Haas, with Williams, Alpine and Stake yet to get off the mark.

If the below points format had been adopted from the start of the 2024 season, Haas would have 17 points, RB 10, Williams five, and Alpine and Stake two apiece.

The F1 Commission is made up of representatives from F1, as the commercial rights holder, the FIA and the 10 teams.

Any agreement made at the Commission would need to go before the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) for official confirmation before adoption for the 2025 season.
