Making his Formula 1 debut in 1980, Mansell wouldn’t win a grand prix until 1985 when he was victorious at the European Grand Prix at Brands Hatch. The 1986 season would see Mansell launch his first assault on the championship, missing out on the title to Alain Prost by two points after experiencing a tire failure at the final round in Adelaide.

Mansell would once again finish second in the 1987 championship, this time losing out to his teammate and rival Nelson Piquet. After an uncompetitive season in 1988, Mansell would move to Ferrari in 1989. His two years with the team would not give him the championship title he so desperately wanted but it would endear him to the tifosi who affectionately called him ‘Il Leone’ (the Lion).

The Brit would move back to the Williams team in 1991 after his relationship with Prost, who had moved to Ferrari in 1990, had become untenable. He would finish second in the championship for a third time before finally achieving his dream. Equipped with one of the greatest cars to ever grace a Formula 1 grid, the FW 14B and Mansell would scorch the field and win both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships.

After claiming the championship in 1992, Mansell left Formula 1 to compete in the American CART championship where he won the title in his debut campaign. He would return to Formula 1 sporadically, winning his final race at the Australian Grand Prix in 1994 before retiring for good in 1995.

Mansell’s 15-year career saw him attain 31 race wins, which makes him the second most successful British driver of all time behind Lewis Hamilton. He also ranks seventh overall on the all-time win list.
